Gingerbread Boy and Girl

The Monday before we got out for Christmas break, we wrapped up our study of many, many different gingerbread books. We had plans to make our own gingerbread boy and gingerbread girl, but it didn’t work out quite like we had planned!

The dough was rolled outthen we used different types of candy to decorate them We were so glad that Mrs. Moran’s daughter was at school with us that day because Mrs. Abraham was struggling to get the Gingerbread girl to look like a gingerbread girl! Here they are before we put them in the oven!The students were so excited to go get the gingerbread boy and girl out of the oven.EEEEEkkkkkkk- when we got to the cafeteria- the gingerbread boy and girl had leaped out of the oven and left us clues all over the school. We had to go on a hunt to find them.

We finally found them under the Christmas tree in Ms. Peck’s room!

Well, it’s been a while since this blog has been updated but we have been SUPER busy in kindergarten getting TONS of BRAN WRINKLES!

Apples were our theme unit a few weeks ago.

We estimated how many seeds would be in the center of the apple, then sliced it open and counted them.

We have READERS~ the students are learning sight words and are now reading.

During our apple unit each student brought in an apple and then we graped each color of apple.

In math we have mastered patterns and sorting!

Here a few of the students favorite books!

We compared and contrasted a pig and a sheep.

and during the afternoon quiet time we have done a few art projects.

Grandparent’s Day Celebration

We had a great turnout for our Grandparent’s Day celebration today! The students sang them two songs and then we had cake and punch!

This is a school year with lots of changes in the VWSD. With so many changes, it’s difficult many days to remember to take photos of your darling children to put on the blog. This is two weeks together- for the simple fact that not too many pictures were taken during this two week period.

R show and tell

rabbits, ribbons, rockets, racecars, remotes, and Reece’sCooler temperatures have allowed us to have some instructional time outside. The students work really hard when we are outside- and always stay fully engaged.

Here we are practicing writing numbers.

The infamous teddy bear picnic baskets. This is also the first day that the students use scissors. With lots of direct and explicit instruction, the picnic bags turned out precious!

Kindergarten is the perfect place to develop language skills. Public speaking and talking to a group are important to practice. The students stood up and introduced their teddy bear to the class and we called it the Teddy bear meet and greet.

The picnic bags were all ready to go!

So were the children and their bears.

Great fun was had by all!

The focus story this week was Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?

We read the two different versions of the book and focused on colors and color words this week. The students love the color parade song and we had a color parade multiple times this week!

Wednesday we read Mouse Paint and then used Cool Whip and food coloring to learn about mixing colors to make new colors.

Sorting was still our skill for math and we learned about a Venn Diagram.

Sorting continued with Brown Bear Brown Bear and we used M & M’s to sort by color. The students used sorting mats and then colored in a bar graph of how many M & M’s of each color they had.

This week we studied M in addition to the many other things!

If You Give a Moose a Muffin was a great story- and we made muffins after reading it!

We finished up the week by making Monster Munch for our Friday afternoon treat.

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

This week in math we learned about sorting. We learned to sort by color and shape. Monday we sorted independently at our table.

Later in the week we worked in groups and sorted by color and then by shape.

The students continue to learn the expectations and procedures for literacy stations, and are doing a great job!

One skill everyone loves learning is about shapes! We sang Shape-A-Loo with our friend Dr. Jean to help us learn shape names.

The focus story this week was Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Science was a great time for us to use our 5 senses and talk about a real coconut. The students passed it around the circle.

Then listened to it. When we shook the coconut, it sounded like there was some liquid inside.

Later in the week we used a hammer to crack open the coconut! It didn’t want to open and Mrs. Abraham had to hit it a BUNCH of times!The coconut cracked…

and we put all the liquid in a cup. The coconut milk does not look like milk we drink. The inside of the coconut The students were then given some grated coconut to taste.

First Week of Kindergarten

We had a great first week of kindergarten! Mrs. Abraham had a hard time remembering to take pictures, but she did get a few. Enjoy the pictures!

Our books this week were about getting ready and going to kindergarten.

The first week of school is spent practicing lots of procedures.

The student’s favorite book this week was The Bus Ride. We read it every day!

This week it was our turn to say the Pledge of Allegiance and our school pledge on the intercom.

Here are the carrots we made after reading “The Carrot Seed” last week. The students colored pictures from the story, and then put them in the correct sequence.

We talked about clouds, and how clouds produce rain.

After we read “The Little Cloud” we made our own cloud formations, and then wrote about what they looked like!The weather was beautiful this week and the students enjoyed using sidewalk chalk.We had a guest reader and she read The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We made our own caterpillars and drew on the body things we would eat if we were a very hungry caterpillar.

Friday we had a fun playing on the playground.

March 28-April 1

This week we studied about spring and plants. We read The Tiny Seedand talked about all the things that seeds need to grow. Then we prepared our pots…..and planted the seeds…………….and finally made sure that there was plenty of water on the seeds…………………..The pots are now by the window getting sunlight so they will grow. We water them each day…………….and can’t wait to see what grows!

We also read The Carrot Seed and did a really great sequencing activity with the events from the book. Mrs. Abraham’s camera was dead and she didn’t take pictures of our carrots, but will next week and include them in next week’s post!

With plans to attend a field trip on Friday, we read the book Manner Matter on a Field Trip. It told us all about the things we should and shouldn’t do when on a field trip with our class!

Then Friday morning we loaded the bus and headed to the Mississippi Children’s Museum. Once we got there we sat outside and got our colored armbands, and listened to the program director give us directions.

off to the museum we went………..we played with water guns, pretended to pump gas and drive a car, dressed up, operated a crane, made music, and MUCH MUCH more.Lunch time rolled around and we went into the park to enjoy a sack lunch provided to us by our school cafeteria. When it was time to return to school, we loaded the bus and it wasn’t long before lots of the tired troopers were snoring.

We had a great week and learned so much!

March 21-25

This week we learned some new comprehension strategies. On Tuesday we practiced the So Far… and Next….. strategy for predicting what we think will come next in a story. The students did wonderful with it and used some deep thinking!

Technology is such a huge part of daily lives in this day- so we are moving toward using lots of technology in our whole group lessons. Kindergarten got a projector to share, so we used it this week. Here you see the students playing “WORD SLAP”. They love this game and think it’s so much fun. (They don’t realize how much they are learning either)

Wednesday afternoon we watched a short video about all the different community helpers and their mode of transportation. You can see in this photo how well the students pay attention when the projector is on!

To wrap up our community helper unit, we made Dr. hats and bags. Each student put items inside their bag that a doctor might need to help someone feel better, or stay well.

This week in math we learned all about the features of a calendar. We practiced putting the days of the week in numerical order.

The 3rd graders at our school are working so hard to get ready for the MCT2. To show our support, we made them a sign with a rainbow of handprints.

On St. Patrick’s Day we went outside and looked for 4 leaf clovers. No one found a 4 leaf clover, but they sure had a great time looking.

When we came back inside from looking for clovers, a leprechaun had destroyed our room. He totally messed up the ENTIRE room.

Thank goodness we had set a trap before we left the room, but there was no leprechaun inside once we settled down enough to check the trap. He left us a note though, and some green pudding.

Rounding Up the Wild Wild West

The past two weeks we have been studying the Wild Wild West! Today we rounded up our unit by dressing up, having cowboy snacks, and a little roping action!

This week we did some sequencing activities with winter events.

It was too cold to go outside, but our bodies need to move, so we did some exercises with our Dr. Jean Better Bodies and Brains DVD!

100th Day of School

The 100th Day of School is a very anticipated day in Kindergarten!

Throughout the day we read these 100 Day books.

The first activity we did is put 100 ice cubes in a bowl and each student estimated where he or she thought the water would be once all the ice was melted. This was a great lesson in how ice melts and turns into water.

During our morning meeting each student stood up and told us about their 100 Day fashions. Mrs. Abraham and Mrs. Moran also sported their 100 Day shirts!

Later in the day the students practiced writing from 1-100

made a 100's day snack where they counted out 10 pieces of each of the 10 snack items

and used 100 foam shapes to make the number 100

The kids were a bit excited, but once they slowed down- they crashed and had to be woken up to examine the melted ice in the bowl.

This week was another 4 day week due to a snow day on Monday!
Tuesday we got right back to work with our math and learning all about 17, 18, and 19.

Tuesday Mrs. Brenda, the nutrition lady, came to teach us about fruits.

This week we read The Mitten retold by Jan Brett and we made a mitten with all of the animals so we could retell the story.

Friday afternoon we had a real people reader! It was a student in our class!!!!! He did great and read with such womderful expression.

The children were so excited about making a gingerbread boy and girl. First the dough was rolled out, then the kids were shaped, then we added candies to decorate them.

The students helped Mrs. Mary put the gingerbread in the oven to bake.

And when we returned to get them-----they were missing!!

So we had to look high and low- their footprints led us outside. One of the students spotted them!

Thursday we made reindeer food. Some oatmeal, glitter, and of course a little magic was added in there too!

Before leaving school on the 60% Friday, there was a school-wide sing-a-long. The teachers did a skit of the 12 days of Christmas!

The week started off with a bullying prevention program.

Then we had the December Student of the Month program

Breakfast with Santa was the highlight of the week!

This week we studied about 3D shapes, so we used some 3D shapes to make a Christmas Tree. The students had a wonderful time and were so focused on fulling covering their cones with green icing.

Thursday we made a bracelet that has different color beads to represent elements of the First Thanksgiving.

White- the sails on the Mayflower

Blue- the ocean

Green- the Pilgrims saw land

Black- the first year was very hard

Brown- the turkey the Pilgrims and Indians ate at the Firsty Thanksgiving

Red- cranberries they ate

yellow- corn they ate

orange- pumpkin or sweet potato pie

Thursday afternoon we made our noodle necklaces. We will wear them at our pow-wow tomorrow, and it also helps us improve our fine motor skills. Stringing noodles on a piece of yarn takes concentration and practice!

Indian Naming Ceremony: The students each got an Indian name and a special necklace and name tag. The students loved being called their Indian name during the day!

Here you see the drumming lesson. The drums were so much fun- but before we could play, Mrs. Abraham told us about how the Indians used drums to make music, and how they used the drums in special ceremonies.

After the drumming lesson we had our feast where we enjoyed ham, turkey, popcorn, corn, deer jerkey, sweet potato pie, and pumpkin pie.

There were lots of parents and grandparents that joined in and were a HUGE help to Mrs. Abraham and Mrs. Moran!

Once the feast was over, we drummed through the hallways!

Today some classes at our school presented a Veteran's Day program where they sang lots of patriotic songs. There were Veterans in attendance who were honored. In our class, we have a student whose Mom is a solider so we took a few pictures after the musical to let her know we were thinking of her on that day!

Buffy Coleman, a former Harlem Globetrotter, came to our school to talk to the students about making good choices and saying NO to drugs!

This week we talked all about fall and these were two of our favorite books!

Tuesday we read "We're Going On a Leaf Hunt" and then Mrs. Abraham decided we should go outside to find leaves. We had some of this left over from 50's day-- so everyone got a piece!The students were looking to see if they could see any leaves that had already changed color.Someone spotted this one!

The students then sat on the hill to look at the leaves changing color across the street.And finally they searched for their very own leaf.

After going outside to find the leaves, we returned to the classroom to make leaf rubbings! The students were amazed at how it worked, and did wonderful with holding the paper still so that the rubbing was clear!

The kids love the "There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a _____" books-- so we read about the bat!

The kids did great using scissors to cut out their handprints to make the wings for their bat.

Friday we read a book about spiders and then made oreo cookie spiders!

Don't forget that this coming week is Red Ribbon Week! Wear your cap on Monday!

50th Day of School

The boys were stylin' in their 50's day gear!

Bubble Gum blowing contest.

This is the little dude that was blowing a bubble................

that kept growing bigger, and bigger, and bigger................And this is the bubble he won the bubble blowing contest with!!

The students tried so hard to hula hoop. It's hard to do so Mrs. Moran gave the students some tips.

The students enjoyed root-beer floats in the classroom!

Everyone gathered in the cafeteria for a Sock Hop. Mr. Hume told the students about life in the 50's and then he and Mrs. Owen showed the students some 50's dance moves!

Monday we had some farm animals come to school! We got to put the rabbits, chicken, and Petunia the minature pot bellied pig!

This week we studied the letters N and D.

We made tactile Ns by covering them with noodles.

We made noodle necklaces.

We read a decodable book with our sight words, go and we!

Played in the bubbles on the way to recess as a good behavior reward.

Real People Read

On Friday, October 1st, Dr. Swinford, the superintendent of the VWSD kicked off her reading initative called "Real People Read" at SAE!

We were so lucky to have all the "real people" at our school on that day.

After the kickoff, Mr. Jerry Bolen came to our classroom and read "There Wasn An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves!".

And then there was a group hug!

And... a group photo!

This was a week full of farm fun!

Pigs!Of course you can't have a pig on a farm unless you have mud. So....we made chocoloate pudding mud puddles!
First you must mix the milk and the pudding and let it sit until it's like pudding instead of milk!

Then you spread it all around.....

Farm books of all types.... But our favorite book was Mrs. Wishy Washy...
Friday we made pig cookies. Pink icing, a sugar cookie, 1 large pink marshmellow, 2 butterscotch chips, 2 chocoloate chips and a popsickle stick are all you need!

Apples were our focus this week!

Here the students are displaying their "Apple Annie" characters. On Friday our school particiated in the Mississippi State Extension "Body Walk". It was a walk through body where we learned facts about each part of your body. Thanks to some parent volunteers for leading a group through!

The Fun Friday treat was to make apple pies. Mrs. Abraham slices the apples as the students wait patiently.

The students all helped make the apple pie- 1 tablespoon of sugar at a time.
Sprinkle some cinnamon!

Add the butter, cover the top with another crust, and put it in the oven.
Tasting the pie after it was finished baking!

Some students were not so sure about the apple pie- but most took at least one bite!

Down on the Farm & Petunia the Purple Cow

This week we started our 3 week study called "Down on the Farm". Since we were studying the color purple and the letter Pp, Mrs. Abraham introduced the students to her friend, Mrs. Nancy's purple cow. The cow's name is Petunia. Petunia lives in Bovina and she can be seen all over the internet.

The students listened and were very eager to learn about Petunia!

P is for Pizza

On Tuesday morning we had a special surprise guest come to share with us how to make pizza. Mrs. Abraham loves eating pizza at Billy's Italian - and so does Ms. Peck. So we invited Mr. Billy to come and share his talents with the classes.

Since our letter this week was P we all wore our PJ's to school!We also read the book If You Give a Pig a Pancake so we made some pancakes.
While mixing up the pancake batter, Mrs. Abraham talked with the students about the use of measuring cups, and what a recipe is, and why we must follow the recipe.

Earlier in the week we saw a picture of Mrs. Nancy's purple cow. This morning Mrs. Nancy milked Petunia and brought us some of her milk! We thought we heard a mooooooo so the children went to see if they could find Petunia around the school- but she wasn't anywhere to be found.

Here we are eating our yummy pancakes and drinking purple milk.

Corp of Engineers

The Army Corp of Engineers Vicksburg District has adopted SAE as their school!! We are so excited to have them as our adoptors. Here are Mrs. Abraham, Mrs. Ederington, and Ms. Peck working hard to construct the recognition certificate we presented to them at our adoption meeting!!

This week our letter was T. During this week teddy bears are very important, and a Teddy Bear Picnic was planned for Wednesday. Almost as important as the picnic is the preparation. Teddy Bear Picnic baskets had to me made- but that required scissors. YIKES!

Ms. Peck came to our classsroom to share the story of her friend Sammy Snip Snap. Now you see, Sammy was a boy who didn't use his scissors properly. She shared with the students how important scissor safety is and the rules of using scissors. Ms. Peck also shared what happends to those who do not use scissors properly. Let me assure you- they all used the scissors with upmost care and all followed the rules and directions.

The children watch and listen as Mrs. Abraham demonstrates the proper way to hold the paper and use the scissors.

And........................then they cut carefully!

Teddy Bear Picnic Day- Wednesday, September 8, 2010

The teddy bears had a slumber party in the classroom. When the students arrived at school on Wednesday, the bears were reading books, had gotten out the Mr. Potato Head centers, and were doing puzzles!

Poppa Bear, also known as Mr. Hume, met us in the hallway and joined us for our picnic. He also read us a book during the picnic.

Mrs. Lovett, who is a retired teacher and grandmother of a student in our class, shared her reading talents and read Brown Bear, Brown Bear.

Mrs. Styles, a parent volunteer at SAE, came and read "Going on a Bear Hunt"!

Munching on snacks and listening to some "bearry" good stories.

These little kindergarten cubs were TIRED after a great day of Teddy Bear Picnic fun!!

Thursday we spent the day working on the letter T and learning all things important about the letter!

We also had our picture taken for the "Grandparents are special becuase...." bulletin board. Back to School Night was at 5:30!

We had our Grandparent's Day celebration in our classroom on Friday!! Wow what a great group of grandparents we had show up-- and the students were so proud to introduce their grandparents to their friends!

This week we studied the letters M and S. On Monday the students added the letter M to their journal. Once the letter was glued into the journal the students practiced writing Mm.

During small groups this week, Mrs. Moran worked with the students to practice writing their name and letter of the week!

While reading the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, we made our own Chicka Chicka Boom Boom trees! The students learned how to write their name and then counted how many letters are in their name.

It was raining today, so we had an inside recess! Dr. Jean has a great DVD that encourages students to get moving. We did many fun exercises- the students loved it.

Each morning we have an interactive newsletter that the students help fill in. Here you see the days helper filling in her name.

The Tooty Ta is the students' favorite song. Thumbs up, elbows back, feet apart, knees together, tongue out, eyes shut, turn around!

To help the students learn the shapes, we sing a song called Shape-A-Loo. All students get a pack of shapes and put the shapes in and out and "shake them all about" during the song.

This week our focus was on learning the rules and procedures of the classroom. Each day we focused on one rule and one procedure and practiced it until it was mastered! Here you see the students doing centers.
Walking in a strait line is a challenge for studnets who have never been required to do so! Two feet in the square by the blue!!

The playground is one of the student's favorite spots. There were lots of laughs and squeals on the playground this week. The slide is so inviting that the students want to slide down all together. Each day we practice skills and writing on our "Morning News". The helper points to the words as Mrs. Abraham reads, and then the students help fill in the blanks. At the end of the day, the helper takes home the morning news. You can see the students in the top left picture with their spy glasses on to "see what they can see"!Our color this week was RED so for show-and-tell the students brought something red! It was the best turn out for show and tell I've ever seen.

Good morning everyone- and by that I mean a very early morning. It's 3:12 a.m. on the first day of school and I am so excited I can't sleep!

We have so many fun and exciting things in store for this year. It's going to be a year where you learn and grow in many different ways.

I enjoyed meeting everyone at Orientation on Tuesday, and can't wait to see you in just a few hours!
